Two people were hospitalized after a stabbing in a London neighborhood known for its large Jewish population, prompting condemnation from national and local leaders as authorities investigate the incident as a suspected antisemitic attack.
Police arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following the attack in Golders Green, an area in northwest London with a longstanding Jewish community. The Metropolitan Police said the victims, a man in his 30s and another in his 70s, were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Keir Starmer condemned the violence, stating that “attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.”
The neighborhood security organization Shomrim reported that the suspect was seen running along Golders Green Road with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish residents. Members of the group detained the individual before police arrived and used a stun device during the arrest.
Authorities said the suspect also attempted to attack responding officers, though no police were injured. Counterterrorism detectives are leading the investigation, but officials have not formally classified the incident as terrorism.
Sadiq Khan said the attack follows a series of recent incidents targeting Jewish sites in the city. “London’s Jewish community have been the target of a series of shocking antisemitic attacks,” Khan said, adding that there must be no tolerance for such acts.
The stabbing comes amid ongoing investigations into multiple arson incidents affecting Jewish locations in London, including damage to ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in Golders Green and a synagogue in a nearby area. Authorities are examining whether those attacks may be linked to foreign-backed actors.
No injuries were reported in the arson cases, though several individuals ranging from teenagers to adults in their 40s have been arrested and charged in connection with those incidents.
The United Kingdom’s Jewish population numbers approximately 300,000 people, with Golders Green serving as one of its central communities, home to religious institutions, schools, and businesses.
Concerns about antisemitism have grown in recent years. Community monitoring groups have reported a significant increase in incidents since the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent conflict in Gaza. Data indicates thousands of reported cases in 2025, compared to lower figures in prior years.
In a separate incident in October 2025, an attack outside a synagogue in Manchester during Yom Kippur resulted in multiple casualties, including a fatal stabbing and another death during the police response.
Officials said the investigation into the latest London stabbing remains ongoing as authorities continue to assess potential connections to broader patterns of violence targeting Jewish communities.
