BEACON – A 10-year-old Beacon student was rescued after 4 p.m. on Tuesday when her finger was trapped in a section of the school’s Olympic-size swimming pool.
Fire Chief Tomas Lucchesi said the child’s finger was lodged in an approximately half-inch opening in a component of the pool structure.
Firefighters conducted an extended technical rescue operation to safely free the child while minimizing the risk of additional injury, he said.
The pool had to be partially drained while firefighters used specialized rescue equipment to carefully cut away a portion of the pool structure.
The child sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The Beacon Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the City of Beacon Police Department while Castle Point firefighters provided standby coverage in Beacon.
