King Charles III and Queen Camilla have arrived in Washington, D.C., for a four-day state visit aimed at strengthening ties between the United Kingdom and the United States, despite heightened political tensions and recent security concerns.
The visit, described by UK ambassador Sir Christian Turner as an effort to “renew and revitalise a unique friendship,” comes at a sensitive moment in transatlantic relations. Disagreements between President Donald Trump and Sir Keir Starmer over foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran, have strained the alliance.
Complicating matters further, a recent shooting in Washington at an event attended by President Trump prompted increased security measures. Despite this, officials confirmed the visit would proceed largely as planned following discussions between British and American authorities. King Charles and Queen Camilla privately expressed their sympathies to the Trump family after the incident.
The royal couple were formally welcomed at the White House by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, marking the beginning of a visit blending ceremony with diplomacy. Events will include a state dinner, meetings with political leaders, and a symbolic visit to the 9/11 Memorial in New York.
A key highlight will be the King’s address to the US Congress, where he is expected to balance reinforcing UK policy positions while maintaining cordial relations with the US administration.
The trip is also seen as an opportunity for President Trump to project statesmanship alongside the British monarchy amid domestic political challenges. He expressed optimism ahead of the visit, saying it could help repair relations between the two nations.
Despite criticism from some UK politicians, the visit underscores enduring ties rooted in shared history, security cooperation, and cultural connections beyond current political differences.
