World No. 4 Iga Swiatek was forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open on Saturday after falling ill during her round-of-32 clash against American player Ann Li, bringing an abrupt end to her title defense.

The match had been tightly contested before Swiatek’s retirement, with Li leading 7-6 (4), 2-6, 3-0 at the time the Polish star decided she could not continue. The opening set saw both players exchange strong baseline rallies, with Li edging ahead in the tiebreak to take an early advantage. Swiatek responded with authority in the second set, leveling the match by showcasing her trademark consistency and court coverage.

However, momentum shifted decisively in the final set. Swiatek appeared physically compromised early, falling behind 2-0 before requesting a medical timeout. Although she briefly returned to the court in an attempt to continue, her condition did not improve. After Li comfortably held serve to extend her lead to 3-0, Swiatek made the decision to retire from the match.

The withdrawal marks a disappointing exit for the reigning Madrid champion, who had entered the tournament among the favorites. She had opened her campaign strongly with a straight-sets victory over Daria Snigur in the previous round, showing no immediate signs of the issues that would later force her out.

For Li, currently ranked No. 34 in the world, the result represents a significant milestone. The win is recorded as only the second victory of her career over a top-10 opponent, underlining her growing confidence and competitiveness on the tour. Her composed performance in the opening set and resilience after dropping the second demonstrated her ability to challenge elite players on a big stage.

Li now advances to the round of 16, where she is set to face Leylah Fernandez. The upcoming match presents another opportunity for the American to build momentum in one of the most prestigious clay-court events on the calendar.

Swiatek’s withdrawal raises questions about her fitness ahead of the remainder of the clay season, particularly with major tournaments approaching. While the nature of her illness has not been disclosed, her early exit will likely be closely monitored as she looks to recover and return to competition in the coming weeks.
