A 32- year -old Canadian woman has been killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire at Mexico’s renowned Teotihuacán archaeological site, officials have confirmed. The attacker later took his own life.

The incident unfolded at the historic pyramid complex, one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Authorities recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon and live ammunition at the scene.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences, describing the attack as deeply distressing. She said her security cabinet had been instructed to investigate fully and provide support to victims and their families. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand confirmed one Canadian was killed and another wounded, adding that consular officials were assisting those affected.

Among the injured are reportedly citizens of Colombia, Russia and Canada. The identity of the gunman and a possible motive have not yet been disclosed.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as gunfire rang out near the Pyramid of the Sun. A British couple visiting the site said tourists began running in confusion, with no clear evacuation instructions from officials. “There was a big push and panic,” they said, adding that security checks appeared minimal upon entry.

The shooting comes weeks before Mexico hosts matches for the FIFA World Cup, with the opening game scheduled in Mexico City on 11 June. Although violence linked to cartels remains a concern in parts of the country, attacks targeting tourists are rare.

Officials say security measures will be intensified ahead of the tournament, as millions of international visitors are expected to arrive.
