Solution 1: Update QuickBooks and Ensure the File Type

  • Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest version.
  • Ensure the file you are opening is a company file (.QBW). Files like backups (.QBB) or portable files (.QBM) need different handling.
  • Check file compression and encryption:
  • Right-click the company file.
  • Select Properties.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Uncheck both the Compress and Encrypt options.
  • Click OK.

Solution 2: Avoid saving the desktop when closing QuickBooks

  • Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Access the No Company Open window.
  • Choose your company file.
  • Press and hold the ALT key while you click Open. Keep holding ALT until the file opens. If you need to sign in, let go of ALT, enter your password, and then press and hold ALT again while clicking OK.
  • If your company file opens, disable the Save the desktop when closing preference by going to Edit.
  • Then, Preferences, and after that, select Desktop View
  • Select Don't save the desktop.
  • Click OK.
  • Close and reopen QuickBooks.
  • Open your company file.
  • Check for the issue.

Solution 3: Disable hosting on workstations

  • Open QuickBooks on a workstation.
  • Do not open your company file.
  • Go to File menu. 
  • Select Utilities.
  • If you see "Host Multi-User Access," skip to the next workstation, but when you see the "Stop Hosting Multi-User Access" option, select it.
  • Repeat these steps for all workstations.
  • On your server computer, open QuickBooks.
  • Go to File, then Utilities
  • Select "Host Multi-User Access." 
  • Toggle the multi-user setting off and on by selecting "Stop Hosting Multi-User Access," then "Host Multi-User Access."
  • Attempt to open your company file again.
