POUGHKEEPSIE. — U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan, D-18, a West Point graduate and combat veteran, said Tuesday’s ceasefire agreement with Iran leaves the United States in a weaker position in the Middle East. Ryan made the remarks Tuesday to Mid-Hudson News after the ceasefire was brokered by Pakistani officials, coming just hours before President Donald Trump’s 8 p.m. deadline. President Trump had warned on social media that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not accept his terms to end the war.
Under the agreement, Iran will allow vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks, with the Iranian military coordinating ship traffic.
Pakistan released a 10-point plan that requires Iran to forgo nuclear weapons and calls for an end to fighting in Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. In return, the United States must release Iranian funds frozen in U.S. banks, and the U.S. and Israel must help pay for Iran’s reconstruction.
After the ceasefire announcement, Ryan said conflicting reports about the agreement’s details have raised more questions. He said the White House must address concerns voiced at the war’s onset, including, “What is the goal and what is the exit plan?”
