Delegation set for weekend negotiations as disputes over ceasefire terms persist

The White House announced Wednesday that JD Vance will lead a U.S. delegation to Pakistan for in-person negotiations with Iran, as diplomatic efforts continue following a recently announced ceasefire.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement shared on X that the delegation will include Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The group is scheduled to travel to Islamabad for talks beginning Saturday morning.

“We look forward to those in-person meetings,” Leavitt said.

The negotiations come amid continued uncertainty surrounding the scope and terms of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Iranian officials have raised concerns about ongoing hostilities involving Israel in Lebanon, warning that the truce could collapse if conditions are not met.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Wednesday that the agreement requires a clear choice by the United States. “[T]he Iran–U.S. Ceasefire terms are clear and explicit: the U.S. must choose—ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both,” he said.

U.S. officials have rejected the assertion that Lebanon is included in the ceasefire framework, maintaining that the agreement does not extend to fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

The upcoming talks in Islamabad are expected to address outstanding disagreements and explore whether a broader or more durable agreement can be reached.
