President Donald Trump agreed Tuesday to suspend U.S. military operations against Iran for a two-week period, announcing a temporary ceasefire following discussions with Pakistan’s prime minister aimed at allowing diplomatic negotiations to continue.

The decision came after talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who had urged the administration to delay further military action to provide additional time for mediation efforts and potential agreement between the parties.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump described the arrangement as reciprocal, writing, “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

The announcement marks a shift in the administration’s posture after days of escalating rhetoric and military activity tied to a deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Officials had warned of continued strikes targeting infrastructure if no agreement was reached.

Sharif had previously called for a temporary pause in hostilities, proposing a two-week window for diplomacy and urging Iran to reopen the key shipping route during that period as a gesture to support negotiations.

The ceasefire signals that both sides may be moving toward a negotiated framework, though no formal long-term agreement has been publicly finalized.

Administration officials have indicated that discussions remain ongoing, with the pause in military activity intended to create space for further talks on a broader resolution to the conflict.
