Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations said Tuesday that the country will not agree to a temporary ceasefire but remains open to negotiations aimed at a lasting resolution to the conflict, as a U.S. deadline tied to the Strait of Hormuz draws near.

Speaking before the United Nations Security Council, Iranian envoy Amir Saeid Iravan said Tehran is prepared to participate in diplomatic efforts involving multiple international actors but emphasized that any agreement must be permanent.

“Iran stands ready to engage constructively with all genuine diplomatic efforts, including [through] Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt, as well as diplomatic efforts by China and Russia, and support any credible initiative capable to — of bringing about the sustainable end to this unlawful and unwarranted war,” Iravan said, according to The Hill.

His remarks come as President Donald Trump has set a Tuesday evening deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, or face potential strikes targeting infrastructure.

Pakistan has been acting as an intermediary in the discussions and earlier in the day urged the United States to extend the deadline by two weeks to allow negotiations to continue.

Trump has issued a series of warnings in recent days tied to the deadline. In a Truth Social post, he wrote, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

He added, “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”

“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World,” Trump continued. “47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”

The diplomatic exchange highlights the divide between calls for an immediate pause in hostilities and Iran’s stated preference for a comprehensive agreement, as international mediators continue efforts to prevent further escalation.
