President Donald Trump said on April 6 that a journalist who first reported the existence of a second missing U.S. airman in Iran could face legal consequences if they refuse to reveal their source, arguing that the leak posed serious national security risks and endangered an ongoing military rescue mission.
Speaking during a White House press conference, Trump said his administration is actively working to identify the individual responsible for disclosing the sensitive information.
“We’re looking very hard to find that leaker,” Trump said. “They basically said that ‘we have one and there’s somebody missing.’ Well, they didn’t know there was somebody missing until this leaker gave the information.”
Leak Allegedly Compromised Rescue Effort
Trump said the unauthorized disclosure came at a critical moment, as U.S. forces were engaged in efforts to locate and recover a second crew member from an F-15 Strike Eagle fighter jet that had been shot down over Iranian territory.
According to the president, the leak risked alerting Iranian forces to the presence of the downed airman, potentially complicating or even derailing the rescue operation.
“So whoever it was, we think we’ll be able to find it out,” Trump said. “Because we’re going to go to the media company that released it, and we’re going to say, ‘national security—give it up or go to jail.’”
He suggested that the administration could pressure the media outlet involved to disclose its source, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences of exposing classified or operational details during an active military mission.
Concerns Over National Security and Press Freedom
Trump framed the issue as one of national security, arguing that premature reporting of sensitive military developments can have real-time consequences on the battlefield.
“When they did that, all of a sudden, the entire country of Iran knew that there was a pilot somewhere on their land fighting for his life,” he said. “It made the situation far more dangerous for everyone involved.”
The president did not name the journalist or media organization in question, nor did he provide details on any specific legal steps being taken. However, his remarks signal a willingness by the administration to pursue aggressive measures in response to leaks involving military operations.
The comments also raise broader questions about the balance between national security and press freedom, particularly in situations involving ongoing military activity. While U.S. law provides certain protections for journalists and their sources, those protections can come under scrutiny when classified information is disclosed during active operations.
Airman Ultimately Rescued
Despite the reported leak, the downed airman was ultimately located and safely recovered by U.S. forces after evading capture for nearly two days inside Iranian territory.
Officials have described the rescue mission as highly complex and dangerous, involving coordinated efforts across multiple branches of the military and intelligence community.
Trump credited U.S. personnel with successfully completing the operation under difficult conditions, while reiterating his concern that the leak could have had far more serious consequences.
“We were lucky this ended the way it did,” he said, underscoring the risks faced by service members operating in hostile environments.
