Thousands of gallons of filtration chemical leak into Fishkill Creek

BEACON – Three-thousand gallons of alum, a chemical used to purify the City of Beacon’s drinking water, leaked last week from the city’s filtration plant into Fishkill Creek.

The source was identified and the leak was stopped and cleaned up along the banks of the creek. And City Administrator Chris White said the city investigated the cause of the leak.

“Subsequently, we have done inspections with New York State DEC to identify how it escaped the plant and those areas are being addressed so this wouldn’t happen in the future, and we are working with our engineer and DEC on updating our operating procedures so that avoid having any kind of spill this this from happening again,” White said.

The city administrator said because of the flow of the creek, the chemical dissipated rather quickly.

Officials said there was no threat to human health and safety as a result of the leak.
