BREWSTER- Smoke alarms awakened a Brewster family on Friday, who called 9-1-1 notifying emergency responders that their two-story wood frame home on Route 6 in the village was filling with smoke.
Brewster Fire Department Assistant Chief Dan Rubin and Brewster State Police arrived within minutes of the dispatch around 6:15 a.m. and confirmed a working fire with smoke throughout the home and flames beginning to spread into the walls of the building.
The chief sounded a general alarm for his department and requested mutual aid from the Carmel, Putnam Lake and Lake Carmel Fire Departments along with the Brewster EMS Squad, a Putnam Paramedic and the Putnam Fire Investigation Team.
Crews knocked down the flames in a matter of minutes which resulted in the home suffering minor damage.
Rubin credited the outcome to the quick response of the two dozen firefighters and the stone construction of the chimney: “Luckily we got here quick enough to contain it to the chimney without it spreading to the rest of the house,” he said.
The chief added that a buildup of soot appeared to have caused the fire, though the homeowners reported that the chimney had been cleaned.
Also assisting at the scene was Putnam 13 Battalion Coordinator Jamie Gagliardo.
No injuries were reported to firefighters or to the occupants of the home.
Firefighters returned to quarters some three hours later.
