In the late 1980s, viewers were introduced to the lives of young college students at an HBCU, navigating their way toward the world beyond. The cast of Different World was a diverse mix of personalities hailing from various backgrounds. “This was their chance to succeed, if only they stayed focused on their goals,” the narrative suggested. While critics initially took time to recognize its appeal, Different World eventually became a favorite, with audiences investing deeply in the characters’ journeys, their growth, and their relationships. By the mid-90s, the series shifted focus—our beloved students had grown up, leaving behind memories of their time on campus, which lingered until recently. Now, a new era begins, with a fresh freshman class and the opportunity to see how much has changed. Many fans are eager to see who will walk those treasured halls once more.
Where it All Began

The 1987 cast of Different World included a mix of rising talent and established stars, such as Lisa Bonet, Jasmine Guy, Marisa Tormei, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, Chenele Brown, Sinbad, Cree Summer, Glynn Thurman, Dawn Lewis, Lou Meyers, and Mary Alice. While most of these actors remained central throughout the show’s run, some departed early on. When news of a reboot started circulating, inquiries continued to build. One question in particular that persisted was in regard to the cast—if the former cast would return, and if so, then who?
Where Are We Now?
Some questions were answered by mere announcement of the premise. It was noted that the reboot would connect to the original series by placing the progeny of Dwayne and Whitley as the center. This only made curious fans eager to know more. To that tune, more good news has emerged. According to Blexmedia, Dawnn Lewis and Glynn Turman are confirmed to reprise their roles as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor and Colonel Bradford Taylor, respectively. This is indeed a welcome reveal, especially given earlier confirmations regarding the cast.
As Blexmedia goes on to note, it was previously reported that many of the alum cast had already committed to returning. That list included Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, and Charnele Brown as Kimberly Reese. With Lewis and Turman also slated to return, it only sweetens the expectations.
It just Keeps Getting Better
The stars are not the only ones returning to Hillman. The original creative team is also returning. Debbie Allen is set to direct the pilot and three additional episodes. Per the source, “Original series creators Reggie and Gina Prince-Bythewood return as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner.” All good news so far.
Somethings Must Change
While some expectations have been met, there still remains the matter of tone. As with many reboots, fans expect the tone to remain familiar. As has been learned through experience, it is only reasonable to anticipate changes—this is, after all, a different era socially, politically, and economically. This seems to be something fans can bank on. As Blexmedia recounts, showrunner Felicia Pride, the series is expected to reflect contemporary issues, offering a modern lens while honoring the cultural significance of the original.
