An unidentified assailant launched a late-night attack on a Russian cultural center in Prague, hurling multiple Molotov cocktails at the building in an incident that has drawn sharp condemnation and heightened diplomatic concern.
Czech police confirmed on Friday that the attack occurred late Thursday in the Czech capital and is now under active investigation. Authorities have not yet identified any suspects or established a clear motive, but security officials are treating the case with urgency given its potential international implications.
Despite the severity of the attack, the building itself did not catch fire. Photographs from the scene revealed a shattered window, along with visible smoke damage staining parts of the exterior wall and two additional windows. Investigators believe the limited damage was partly due to the failure of several of the incendiary devices to ignite properly.
The targeted facility, commonly known as the Russian House, serves as a hub for promoting Russian culture, history, and language. While it is funded by the Russian government, it does not hold official diplomatic status. The center regularly hosts cultural exhibitions, educational initiatives, scientific discussions, and Russian language courses aimed at fostering cultural exchange.
Igor Girenko, the director of the center, stated that of the six Molotov cocktails thrown, only half detonated. He suggested that the consequences could have been far more severe had all the devices ignited successfully, potentially endangering lives and causing significant structural damage.
The incident quickly drew a response from Moscow. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “barbaric act” and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice. Russian officials have expressed concern over what they see as a growing threat to their institutions abroad.
In response, the Russian embassy in Prague formally requested that Czech authorities strengthen security measures around Russian facilities and ensure the safety of their personnel in the country. The embassy emphasized the need for increased vigilance amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar also denounced the attack, labeling it “unacceptable” and reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining public safety and protecting foreign institutions operating within its borders. He assured that law enforcement agencies are fully engaged in the investigation and will take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents.
The attack comes at a time of strained relations between Russia and several European nations, adding another layer of tension to an already complex geopolitical landscape. Authorities in Prague continue to gather evidence as they work to determine who was behind the assault and whether it was an isolated act or part of a broader pattern of hostility.
