President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is postponing a deadline tied to possible U.S. military action against Iran’s energy infrastructure, granting an additional 10 days for ongoing negotiations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 P.M., Eastern Time,” adding, “Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well.”

The extension marks the second time the administration has delayed potential action after initially setting a late-March deadline tied to warnings that the United States could target Iran’s oil production and power generation facilities if diplomatic progress stalled.

U.S. officials had previously indicated that indirect communication channels had opened through regional intermediaries, prompting the first delay. The latest postponement explicitly cites a request from the Iranian government, though Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed making such a request.

Senior administration officials described the discussions as part of a broader effort to de-escalate the conflict, including possible ceasefire arrangements, limits on Iran-backed regional activity, and discussions surrounding sanctions relief in exchange for verifiable actions by Tehran.

One U.S. official familiar with the talks said there is “real movement, but gaps remain,” indicating that while negotiations have advanced, key issues have not yet been resolved.

Iranian officials have publicly expressed skepticism about the proposals. Statements carried by state media have rejected what Tehran characterized as “one-sided conditions,” with officials emphasizing that any agreement must be based on “mutual respect and tangible guarantees.”

The exchange reflects differing public messaging from both sides, with U.S. officials highlighting incremental progress while Iranian authorities signal continued resistance to current terms.

The repeated deadline extensions underscore the potential consequences of military action targeting Iran’s energy sector, which analysts warn could lead to broader retaliation and impact global energy markets.

Particular concern has centered on the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime corridor for oil shipments, where escalation could disrupt supply routes and influence global prices.

By delaying action, the administration is maintaining the option of military escalation while allowing additional time for diplomacy. Officials said the coming days will be critical in determining whether negotiations advance toward an agreement or collapse, potentially leading to further conflict.
