Israel has carried out a targeted strike that killed the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, according to a Jerusalem Post report.
An Israeli defense official told the publication that Alireza Tangsiri was killed in Bandar Abbas, a major Iranian port city located near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors. Israeli defense sources said the Israel Defense Forces conducted the operation.
Several senior aides to Tangsiri were also reported killed in the same strike.
Tangsiri had led the IRGC Navy since 2018 and was considered a central figure in Iran’s maritime operations. In recent weeks, he had taken a more aggressive posture in the Persian Gulf, issuing warnings that U.S.-linked oil infrastructure could be targeted along with military installations.
“Our list of targets is updated,” Tangsiri said last week. “Oil facilities associated with America are now on par with American bases and will come under fire with full force.”
The strike comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran and military activity across the region. U.S. officials have repeatedly identified Iran’s naval capabilities as a key target in ongoing operations aimed at limiting Tehran’s ability to project power in strategic waterways.
Since the escalation of the conflict, U.S. forces are believed to have destroyed approximately 100 vessels associated with Iran’s navy and the IRGC, significantly reducing the country’s operational capacity in maritime zones.
