Avondale, AZ- Race fans in Arizona packed Phoenix Raceway for a weekend full of speed, tension, and dramatic finishes. The return of IndyCar racing to the Valley for the first time since 2018 added even more excitement as fans waited to see who would take the checkered flag in the Good Ranchers 250 and the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series GOVX 200.
Twenty seven IndyCars entered the Good Ranchers 250, but only one driver would leave as the winner.
Josef Newgarden, driving the No. 2 car, claimed victory in the Good Ranchers 250. Newgarden led eight laps during the race and showed why he is considered one of the top drivers in the sport. At one point he was running in 13th place, but he worked his way through the field with smart driving and steady speed. Lap by lap he climbed the leaderboard before taking the checkered flag. Newgarden is a two time IndyCar champion and won the Indianapolis 500 in 2023. He has built a reputation as one of the strongest oval track drivers in the series.
Kyle Kirkwood, driving the No. 27 car, finished second after leading much of the race. Kirkwood led 47 laps and proved to be a tough competitor throughout the event. He is widely known for his strength on street circuits, but his performance in Phoenix showed he can compete on ovals as well.
David Malukas, in the No. 12 car, finished third after an impressive run. Malukas led the most laps in the race with 73. With 78 laps remaining he was running ninth, but he steadily fought his way back into the top three. His comeback drive kept fans on the edge of their seats as he charged toward the podium.
Later on in the day, the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series GOVX 200 brought its own share of drama.
Thirty eight cars took the green flag at Phoenix Raceway. The race turned into a tight battle that came down to the final laps. Justin Allgaier, driving the No. 7 car, took the victory after making a decisive pass late in the race. Allgaier moved past Jesse Love with about eleven laps remaining and held the lead to the finish.
Love had dominated much of the race, leading 114 laps and controlling the pace for long stretches. Despite finishing second, his performance showed why many in the sport believe he has a bright future ahead.
Phoenix has been a strong track for Allgaier. In the championship race at Phoenix in November 2025, a miscalculated pit stop cost him a chance at victory. That same race ended with Jesse Love winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship. Many observers believe Love has the talent to eventually move up to the NASCAR Cup Series.
Fans who watched both races back to back could see clear differences between IndyCar and NASCAR competition.
IndyCars pit less often because of different fuel and tire strategies. An IndyCar can run about 30 to 35 laps on a tank of fuel, while NASCAR stock cars usually pit every 20 to 25 laps. NASCAR vehicles are heavier and races include stage breaks, which create additional pit opportunities. IndyCar races run without stage breaks and rely more on fuel strategy.
Speed is another noticeable difference. On large oval tracks IndyCars average about 180 to 190 miles per hour. NASCAR stock cars, such as those racing at Daytona, average around 140 to 160 miles per hour.
For Arizona race fans, the weekend delivered exactly what they hoped for. Two major races, dramatic passes, and standout performances from some of the best drivers in motorsports. Phoenix Raceway once again proved it can deliver thrilling racing across multiple series.
