A Two-Decade Ambition Realized: Denzel Washington’s ‘Hannibal’ Moves Forward

It looks like Denzel Washington isn’t retiring just yet—nor is he leaving Rome behind. This week brings another update regarding Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s long-gestating project “Hannibal.”

Back in 2023, several outlets reported that Washington had been tapped to portray the legendary Carthaginian general. As Deadline noted at the time,

“Netflix has attached Denzel Washington to play the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal in an untitled epic drama that will reteam him with Antoine Fuqua for Netflix.”

While public chatter around the project quieted in the years that followed, silence does not necessarily signal abandonment. In this case, it appears quite the opposite. The film has now been confirmed to enter production this summer.

Things Take Time

The project itself has been brewing for quite some time. According to the same Deadline reporting, Washington has had his sights set on portraying Hannibal for roughly two decades. Now that ambition appears to be moving toward realization. It also reunites one of Hollywood’s more reliable collaborative pairings. As ComingSoon.net notes,

This will mark the sixth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua, a partnership that began with the Oscar-winning crime drama “Training Day.”

Shaping Up

Another notable creative name has joined the project as well. Acclaimed cinematographer Robert Richardson has reportedly signed on. Per Coming Soon.net,  Richardson is widely recognized for his striking visual work on films such as “The Aviator,” “Kill Bill: Volume 1,” and “Inglourious Basterds,” making his involvement a significant addition to the creative team.

Though additional plot details remain scarce, the historical premise itself requires little introduction for those familiar with ancient military history. Washington will portray Hannibal Barca. Who is Hannibal Barca?

“He is none other than the formidable Carthaginian general who famously led an army—including war elephants—across the Alps in a daring campaign against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.”

“Hannibal”: Takes Washington Back to Rome

Interestingly, this will not be Washington’s first cinematic journey into the world of Rome. In “Gladiator II,” he portrayed Marcus Opellius Macrinus, the historical figure who would eventually ascend to the Roman throne. The new project, therefore, continues Washington’s recent engagement with stories rooted in the ancient Mediterranean world.

Not Done Yet

As for retirement rumors, Washington has indeed spoken about the idea of stepping away—eventually. However, he has been careful to clarify that such a decision is not imminent. In a 2024 interview with The Independent, he remarked,

“I am only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. It’s probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.”

For now, that list clearly still includes a few ambitious undertakings. And audiences will soon be waiting to see Washington take the screen as one of antiquity’s most formidable military strategists—none other than Hannibal himself.
