President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States may deploy naval escorts for commercial oil tankers traveling through the Strait of Hormuz as tensions with Iran intensify.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible.” He added, “No matter what, the United States will ensure the FREE FLOW of ENERGY to the WORLD. The United States’ ECONOMIC and MILITARY MIGHT is the GREATEST ON EARTH.”

The president also stated that he directed the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to provide “political risk insurance and guarantees” aimed at protecting maritime trade transiting the Gulf region.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, serves as one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, roughly one-fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption passes through the narrow waterway, making it a key chokepoint for international oil markets.

Financial markets responded to the developments, with oil prices climbing and U.S. stock futures declining as investors weighed the possibility of supply disruptions.

Iran has previously threatened to close or interfere with shipping traffic in the strait during periods of heightened military or economic pressure from the United States and its allies.

The U.S. Navy’s United States Fifth Fleet, headquartered in Bahrain, maintains a regular presence in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters. During Operation Earnest Will in 1987 and 1988, U.S. naval forces escorted reflagged Kuwaiti tankers after Iranian attacks on commercial vessels amid the Iran-Iraq War.

Trump’s latest remarks indicate the administration is prepared to use naval assets to deter interference with global energy shipments and maintain open maritime lanes through the Strait of Hormuz.
