Warwick NYPD sergeant indicted for fatal drunk driving crash on Taconic Parkway

A New York Police Department (NYPD) sergeant from Warwick has been indicted for allegedly killing a man while driving drunk on the Taconic State Parkway in Mount Pleasant while off-duty last month.

State Attorney General Letitia James announced that Tiffany Howell, 47, faces multiple charges connected to the crash, including manslaughter and aggravated vehicular homicide. The AG’s office handles the prosecutions of police officers or peace officers, including a corrections officer. accused of killing someone.

James alleges that at 11:37 p.m. on January 22, Howell was driving south in the northbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway at more than 50 mph when she crashed head-on into the car driven by 61-year-old Manuel Boitel. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. Howell was off duty at the time of the collision.

Howell allegedly had a blood alcohol level of 0.18%, above the 0.08% state limit. The NYPD has suspended her without pay.

Howell was arraigned on Monday by Judge George Fufidio at Westchester County Court. Judge Fufidio set bail at a $250,000 bond, or a $500,000 partially secured bond, with a $100,000 cash alternative. Sergeant Howell is due back in court on March 18 before Judge Anne B. Bianchi. The maximum sentence on the top count is eight and one-third to 25 years in prison.
