CNN has experienced a substantial decline in viewership since 2016, according to ratings data cited in a recent Daily Mail report.
The report states that CNN’s primetime audience has dropped from approximately 1.3 million viewers in 2016 to 553,000 in recent Nielsen measurements, representing a decrease of nearly two-thirds over the past decade. January figures were reportedly even lower, with primetime personalities including Jake Tapper, Anderson Cooper, Erin Burnett and Kaitlan Collins drawing 488,000 viewers.
Daytime programming has seen similar declines. According to the report, CNN’s daytime audience fell from 752,000 viewers in 2016 to 433,000 more recently. When compared to the same period in 2021, the declines were more pronounced, with primetime down 71 percent and daytime down 73 percent.
The Daily Mail cited unnamed network executives who described the ratings trajectory as concerning, even as the broader television news industry continues to face audience fragmentation. A CNN source quoted in the report attributed the drop in part to changing media consumption habits, noting that more viewers now access news through digital platforms and alternative outlets.
The reported figures have fueled speculation about the network’s long-term strategy and ownership structure, though CNN’s parent company has denied rumors of a potential sale.
Reaction to the ratings data circulated widely on social media. Buck Sexton wrote, “Never has a tv news network so richly deserved it’s ignominious collapse into nothingness,” in a post that can be viewed here.
Stephen L. Miller commented, “You mean four people screaming at one person while the host interrupts like a condescending child isn’t something people want to watch?” His post is available here.
Mollie Hemingway wrote, “Gosh I hope all those hoaxes they willfully aired were worth it!” in a post viewable here.
Another user, EducatëdHillbilly™, wrote, “You’re telling be being a mouthpiece for Democrats and condescending to over half of America isn’t popular viewing?!?” That post can be seen here.
Doug Powers added, “Ya hate to see it. They could always go work at the Washington Po…. wait, never mind,” in a post available here.
While the network has not released detailed commentary beyond standard ratings reports, the data underscores ongoing shifts in television news consumption patterns, as cable outlets contend with declining linear audiences and increasing competition from streaming services and digital media platforms.
