Amtrak restores Rhinecliff to Albany service; no longer sanctions Metro-North service

ALBANY – Metro-North Railroad’s plan to extend its Hudson Line service north of Poughkeepsie to Albany-Rensselaer has been dashed as Amtrak, which had been providing the service before cutting it, announced it would resume.

The restored Amtrak service will begin in early March.

Governor Kathy Hochul, who had earlier announced the extended Metro-North service, wants to continue exploring it.

MTA Chairman Janno Lieber told the agency’s monthly meeting on Wednesday that Metro-North service is still on the radar.

“She instructed us to keep planning for this because there seems to be some interest in, maybe, Metro-North, perhaps because we’re usually half the cost of Amtrak, right, continuing to plan for the possibility, at some future date, providing some version of service north of Poughkeepsie,” he said.

The governor said New Yorkers “rely on high quality rail transit like no other state, and I will always fight to save commuters time and to make service better.”
