A U.S. aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln has entered the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, a region that includes Iran, according to U.S. officials. The deployment was confirmed to CBS News by a U.S. official familiar with the movement.

The strike group consists of the Abraham Lincoln and three guided-missile destroyers — the USS Frank E. Petersen, Jr., the USS Spruance, and the USS Michael Murphy. The carrier air wing includes F/A-18 Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, F-35C fighter jets, and MH-60 helicopters. As of Monday morning, the group had not yet reached its final operational position and was not considered “on station.”

The repositioning of U.S. naval assets comes amid heightened regional tensions but without confirmation of imminent military action. President Donald Trump has so far refrained from ordering retaliatory strikes against Iran despite ongoing unrest and reports of mass killings of protesters. The movement of the carrier strike group, however, expands U.S. military options in the region.

Iranian military leaders and Tehran-backed militant organizations have responded with warnings. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated terrorist factions across the Middle East have reportedly indicated they are prepared for conflict. IRGC Gen. Mohammad Pakpour said Iranian forces have their “finger on the trigger” and warned the United States and Israel against “any miscalculation,” according to reporting from Iran-linked Nournews and The Associated Press.

Trump said last week that a “massive fleet” was moving toward Iran “just in case” action becomes necessary, while emphasizing that the force may ultimately not be used.

Amid the escalation, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly gone into hiding over fears of potential U.S. airstrikes, according to a report from The Jerusalem Post.

The developments unfold against the backdrop of widespread protests inside Iran that began in late December. Trump has repeatedly warned Iranian authorities against the killing of peaceful demonstrators and the mass execution of individuals detained during the unrest, framing the situation as a test of Tehran’s conduct under international scrutiny.

U.S. officials have not announced any changes to rules of engagement or confirmed whether the carrier group will be tasked with deterrence, contingency planning, or other operational missions as tensions in the region continue to evolve.
