Prince Harry Takes the Stand in Final Phase of Lawsuit Against Daily Mail Publisher

BY EMMANUEL OGBONNA

Prince Harry entered the witness box on Wednesday to give evidence against the publisher of the Daily Mail, marking the final stage of one of his most significant legal battles against Britain’s tabloid press and underscoring his long-running campaign against what he describes as unlawful and intrusive media practices.

The Duke of Sussex is suing Associated Newspapers Ltd., the publisher of the Daily Mail and its sister title The Mail on Sunday, alongside six other high-profile claimants, including musician Elton John and actor Elizabeth Hurley. The group alleges the company engaged in what they describe as a “clear, systematic and sustained use of unlawful information gathering” over a period spanning two decades.

In a detailed written witness statement submitted to the court, Harry said he was deeply distressed by what he described as relentless intrusions into his private life, particularly during his childhood and early adulthood. He told the court that repeated press revelations about his movements, personal relationships and private communications left him feeling “paranoid beyond belief,” convinced that his life was under constant surveillance.

Harry said the coverage had a lasting psychological impact, shaping his view of the media and contributing to a sense of anxiety and mistrust that followed him into adulthood. He argued that the alleged methods used by journalists went far beyond legitimate reporting and crossed into unlawful behavior, including the use of private investigators and illicit techniques to obtain personal information.

Associated Newspapers has strongly denied the accusations. The company maintains that its reporting was lawful and in the public interest, and it has rejected claims of widespread or systematic wrongdoing. Its legal team has said witnesses from the newspapers will testify during the nine-week trial and will identify sources used for contested stories in an effort to rebut the allegations.

Defense lawyer Antony White began cross-examining Harry shortly after he took the stand, focusing on the written evidence he had submitted and challenging his interpretation of how certain stories were obtained and published.

Dressed in a dark suit, Harry stood in the witness box and held a small Bible in his right hand as he swore the oath, pledging to tell “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” He asked to be addressed simply as Prince Harry during the proceedings.

The testimony marks the second time Harry has appeared as a witness in a case against a British newspaper group. In 2023, he broke with long-standing royal tradition by becoming the first senior member of the royal family in more than a century to testify in court when he took the stand in a separate case against the publisher of the Daily Mirror. That appearance was widely seen as a watershed moment in the royal family’s relationship with the media.

Harry’s legal actions form part of a broader effort he has described as a mission to hold parts of the British press accountable for past practices. He has repeatedly said that unchecked tabloid behavior played a role in the pressures faced by his family, including his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and has vowed to pursue reform through the courts.

As the trial enters its final phase, the court will hear extensive testimony from both sides, with judges expected to weigh not only the credibility of individual claims but also whether the alleged practices amounted to a coordinated pattern of unlawful conduct. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for the British newspaper industry and for other public figures considering similar legal challenges.
