'I Don't Want You Freezing to Death': Officers Buy Jacket and Snow Pants for Freezing Shoplifter

On a freezing day in late December 2025, a routine police call in Redmond, Washington, transformed into a powerful example of humanity and empathy. What began as a report of a shoplift in progress at a local Target ended with officers ensuring a homeless man wouldn't be left to face the elements alone.

On December 27, officers detained a man outside the store who had been found with stolen clothing. Upon questioning, the man revealed the desperate circumstances behind his actions: he was homeless, living in freezing conditions, and had attempted to take a jacket and snow pants simply to stay warm. To make matters worse, he told the officers he was suffering from a painful hand infection and that his prescribed antibiotics had been stolen.

Recognizing the man was in distress, the officers called Redmond WA Fire medics to the scene to assess his injury and transport him to a hospital for treatment. However, the officers realized that medical treatment solved only part of the problem. They knew that after his release, "he would likely be released back into cold conditions".

In a heartwarming decision, the officers used a card from the BlueBridge Alliance—a non-profit organization that helps police connect with their community—to legally purchase the jacket and snow pants for the man before he was taken to the hospital.

Body camera audio captured the touching exchange, where the officer explained that he didn't want the man to suffer in the cold:

Police Officer: "...so, I bought you the coat and the snow pants. I bought it, okay? 'Cause I know... I know what's going to happen is, uh, after you leave the hospital, you're probably gonna be back in the same predicament."

Man: "You're a good man. You're a good man."

Police Officer: "It's yours. Um, okay? 'Cause I don't want you freezing to death."

Man: "No, I appreciate you."

The interaction demonstrated that justice and compassion can coexist. The officer was clear that the law still applied, telling the man, “The deal is, after today, obviously you're gonna have to... this is still going to have to get rectified, so you'll have to go to court on it, okay? So that's not being erased”.

The Redmond Police Department noted that while the theft remains illegal, this unique moment highlights "an important balance of holding people accountable and recognizing their immediate human needs".

Despite the legal trouble, the man was left with warmth and gratitude, telling the officer at the end of the encounter, “God bless you, man.”
