In the darkest moments of life, when hope seems a distant memory, transformation is still possible. Valerie Anne Smith’s story is one of unimaginable struggle, relentless perseverance and extraordinary healing. Through decades of battling severe mental and physical illnesses, she found her way to vibrant health and newfound purpose. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope for anyone trapped in despair.
A Lifetime of Struggle
Born and raised in southwestern Ohio, Valerie endured unimaginable suffering. From age three, she was plagued by sadness and anxiety, emotions that evolved into diagnoses of clinical depression, panic attacks, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anorexia and more. "I don’t have any memories of being well, whether mentally or physically," she told The Bright Story.
By her teens, Valerie’s weight had plummeted to 70 pounds. Her body deteriorated, riddled with osteoporosis, gastrointestinal disorders and hormonal imbalances. "I was officially diagnosed with anxiety, panic attacks, and clinical depression at the age of 12, and that’s when I started traditional treatment. It then progressed at 14, when I was diagnosed with anorexia."

Her struggles weren’t just physical. By age 15, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, suffering from terrifying hallucinations and hearing "evil, screaming voices, 24 hours a day." These voices drove her into cycles of paranoia and self-harm, telling her to hurt herself and others. "I would slip into paranoid delusions and slip out of reality. These voices would tell me my family was going to harm me, and that I needed to harm them first."
By her 20s, things escalated further. Valerie developed obsessive-compulsive disorder, leading to intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors like body checking, lock checking and counting. Self-harm became a daily battle. "I was cutting my arms and legs daily to cope with the schizophrenic voices and self-starvation. I also developed trichotillomania, pulling out my scalp hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes as a way to punish myself."
The torment continued into adulthood. Her physical health declined alongside her mental state. She suffered from gastrointestinal diseases, chronic bladder pain, interstitial cystitis, severe tinnitus and extreme hormonal imbalances. "Doctors deemed each of these conditions incurable, and I lived in a constant state of pain and despair." Her weight remained dangerously low, and for four decades, she hovered around a BMI of 11—a level of malnutrition most don’t survive.

Despite her suffering, every attempt at traditional treatment failed. Hospitalization after hospitalization, psychiatrist after psychiatrist—nothing brought relief. “I gave traditional treatment 40 years of my life, and I never got better. There was never a reduction in any symptom, ever, whether it be mental or physical.”
A Desperate Search for Answers
By 2017, at age 47, Valerie had reached a breaking point. Her body was shutting down, her mind tormented by ceaseless voices, and her will to live was fading. But amid this despair, she discovered the work of Dr. Georgia Ede, Dr. Chris Palmer, Dr. Ken Berry and Dr. Shawn Baker. They spoke of something radical: the power of nutrition in healing the brain and body.
For someone who’d spent 35 years on a plant-based diet, consuming animal products was unthinkable. "I had been plant-based and had not consumed any animal products for 35 years—not an egg, not a bite of chicken." But with nothing left to lose, she began the slow, painful process of reintroducing nutrient-dense foods.

The Power of Metabolic Healing
Valerie’s healing wasn’t immediate. Due to her deeply ingrained anorexia, she started with one bite of meat a day, slowly increasing over time. But as weeks turned to months, something miraculous happened. The anxiety and depression that had suffocated her for years began to lift.
"At the six-month mark in the ketogenic carnivore diet, it now felt like these voices were in another room with the door closed. It was the first time I’d ever experienced any reduction whatsoever," she says. The schizophrenia, OCD and relentless compulsion to self-harm unraveled. At the 12-month mark, every mental illness was in full remission.

The healing didn’t stop there. Physical ailments deemed incurable—osteoporosis, gastrointestinal disorders, bladder dysfunction and more—vanished. Her body regained strength, and she gained 50 pounds of muscle, permanently restoring her health. "It was the ketogenic metabolic therapy that healed my brain and healed my anorexia. It was not weight gain."
A New Mission: Advocacy and Hope
Valerie’s transformation was extraordinary, but what makes her story remarkable is what she did next. Rather than retreating into quiet recovery, she became an advocate, metabolic health coach and public speaker. She began sharing her story on global platforms, inspiring others to explore nutrition’s impact on mental health.

Despite skepticism from traditional medical professionals—many dismissed her recovery as a placebo effect—Valerie stood firm. "Some of the doctors said, ‘Well, the carnivore diet is only masking your symptoms, and you need to be admitted into the hospital for real doctors to take care of you.’ Really? I gave them 40 years of my life and gained no healing. That answer is not correct either."
A Message of Hope
To those trapped in mental illness, Valerie offers a simple, powerful message: There is hope. She challenges them to ask: "Is my current treatment truly addressing the root cause of my suffering?" If not, she urges consideration of a ketogenic carnivore diet.
"If they answer these questions honestly within themselves, they have to understand that there are no downsides to trying and going all in on a ketogenic carnivore diet. These are not drugs. This is food, so there are no drug side effects that need to be mitigated. This is nutrient-dense food."
Her story proves healing is possible—even after decades of suffering. It’s a call for the medical community to revisit mental health treatment, prioritize nutrition and honor the oath to "first, do no harm."
A New Beginning
Today, Valerie Anne Smith is living proof that complete healing is possible. She enjoys a life free from the mental and physical illnesses that once controlled her. Her energy levels soar, her mind is clear, and she feels strong in body and spirit. "Every day, I wake up feeling truly alive, something I never thought I would experience," she says. She inspires others as a metabolic health coach, offering a lifeline of hope.
Physically, Valerie has transformed. From a dangerously low 70 pounds with a BMI of 11, she’s restored her body to a healthy weight, gaining 50 pounds of muscle. Her BMI is now healthy, and she’s no longer frail—she lifts weights regularly and maintains an athletic physique. Her once-brittle bones, ravaged by malnutrition, have strengthened, and she’s free from osteoporosis and chronic pain.

Her life is unrecognizable from the past. No longer a prisoner of mind or body, she’s vibrant and filled with gratitude. Every day, she wakes knowing she’s been given a true first chance at life.
"I liken it to the phoenix rising from the ashes. I was dead, and now I have been reborn."
Her story isn’t just personal triumph—it’s a revolution in healing. It reminds us that no matter how dark life seems, hope and transformation are within reach.
