It all started in a small township in Franschhoek, South Africa, on a hot and sweltering day. Gunnar, just five to six weeks old, had been left behind after animal control had come through the area. They had taken his mother and siblings, tragically euthanizing them under the guise of disease control. Gunnar, by some stroke of fate, had been overlooked—left alone to survive in harsh conditions for an entire week.
"He’d had a week of being cold and scared and alone," said Rachel Sylvester, founder of Sidewalk Specials, a dog rescue organization that works tirelessly in underprivileged areas of South Africa. When Rachel and her team arrived, Gunnar was barely holding on. Lying among trash with no food or water, the tiny puppy was dehydrated, infested with ticks, and perilously weak. "When we first got him, he was like, I'd say about three days away from dying at best."
Yet through it all, Gunnar remained joyful and trusting. "He never showed any aggression," Rachel shared. "He ate everything we put in front of him, drank everything we put in front of him, no growling, no fear."
Gunnar’s positive mindset and gentle spirit carried him through the tough days of recovery. Within a short time, his transformation was astonishing. Once a fragile puppy barely able to stand, he blossomed into a playful, rock-hunting enthusiast. His foster family fell in love with him instantly, and within a week, he was adopted by his new owner, Freya.
"He wasn’t difficult to open up to us at all," Freya said, describing how seamlessly Gunnar fit into his new home. Gunnar’s life is filled with walks, games, and endless love. His favorite hobby is hunting for rocks—he carefully selects the perfect one, proudly bringing it to his humans, just like that piece of bread he once carried to his rescuers.
