Torrential Rainfall Tallied in South Florida

MIAMI (NEWSnet) – Flood watches will continue into Friday for parts of South Florida that have already seen an inundation of rainfall and disruptions this week

The National Weather Service in Miami issued a “high” risk for excessive rainfall shortly before noon Thursday for part of south Florida, saying “locally catastrophic flash flooding is possible.”

Even before that point, south Florida residents were clearly dealing with a disaster situation with floodwater several feet deep in some locations.

Local and state authorities have already issued state of emergency declarations. Many community services were closed, including some library branches and local parks. The Miami-Dade County offices operated on limited staff.

The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer authority reported rain and floodwaters were inundating the community’s wastewater supply into its three treatment plants, which were operating at full capacity. To prevent compounding the problem, residents of Miami-Dade County were urged to notify local authorities if they saw sewer system access covers open or water flowing out of those mains.

In the meantime, NWS in Miami has tallied rainfall reports for the 48 hours ending 4 a.m. Thursday, with the data including the following:

  • 20.43 inches in North Miami, Miami-Dade County.
  • 19.39 inches in Hollywood, Broward County.
  • 17.75 inches in Oasis, Collier County.
  • 14.45 inches in Everglades City, Collier County.
  • 10.10 inches in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County.
