The 'Twelve Days of Christmas' Gift List is a Pricey One

The 'Twelve Days of Christmas' Gift List is a Pricey One

(NEWSnet) – If someone purchased or hired all of the gifts and services mentioned in “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” the total cost in 2023 is 2.5% more than in 2022.

That’s according to the PNC Christmas Price Index report, now in its 40th season of calculating the gifts of “true love” as related in the decades-old holiday tune.

The song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” repeats and adds to the list on each verse, so any one gift that is particularly expensive can add noticeably to the total. In addition, the goods and services “tend to be expensive,” the report says, with the cost of swans being particularly volatile over the years.

But as the company relates, the total amount historically follows the same trends as indicated by the U.S. Department of Labor’s U.S. Consumer Price Index.

The individual gifts related in the modern version of the lyrics, and this year’s costs, are:

  • A partridge in a pear tree: $319.18.
  • Two turtle doves: $75.
  • Three French hens: $330.
  • Four calling birds: $599.96.
  • Five gold rings: $1,245.
  • Six geese-a-laying: $780.
  • Seven swans-a-swimming: $13,125.
  • Eight maids-a-milking: $58.
  • Nine ladies dancing: $8,308.12.
  • Ten lords-a-leaping: $14,539.
  • 11 pipers piping: $3,207.38.
  • 12 drummers drumming: $3,468.02.

The grand total for this year is $201,972.66.
