In Mexico, it is considered a high-proof gift from the gods: mezcal. In the rest of the world, the mother drink of tequila is mainly known for the caterpillar that is attached to the bottle. But mezcal is more than that - it is an attitude to life and an important economic factor in the impoverished province of Oaxaca. Even the indigenous people of the Mexican region of Oaxaca, the Zapotecs brewed mezcal from wild agaves and medicinal plants for their rites. Today, the traditional mezcal is mainly distilled in family businesses. The different types of agave from the province of Oaxaca give it its special taste.

Thousands of agaves line the fields in Oaxaca, Mexico, each one over a metre high and peppered with spear-like leaves. Harvesting is backbreaking work. Work is in full swing in Don Felipe's fields. The harvested agave hearts are cooked, crushed and fermented. Then the real art of the mescalero begins: the distillation that gives the mezcal its typical taste. There are over fifty different varieties. The best known is tequila. The traditional mezcal is mainly produced in the Oaxaca region. Here, many families live from mezcal production. The mezcaleros, mezcal masters, pass on their recipes to the next generation.
