Russian "hawks" are outraged by Ukrainian strikes against Russia and the US's failure to fulfill its promise to force Ukraine to capitulate. They are calling on the Kremlin to abandon diplomacy entirely and resort to escalation of the conflict, according to Reuters , which analyzes the Russian information space.
The publication notes that calls for escalating war are nothing new for Russia. Ultranationalists have long been pushing for full mobilization, the destruction of the government quarter in Kyiv, the assassination of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and attacks on European factories supporting Ukraine's defense. Some hotheads even call for a nuclear war.
But the large-scale Ukrainian strikes on Moscow and St. Petersburg, which were humiliating for Russia, made the voices of these radicals louder.
"What else needs to happen before we start fighting for real? War means victory at any cost. Ukrainians are fighting, so they're fighting with everything they've got," Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, known for his nationalist views, recently said.
At one time, it was he who financed the invasion of Igor Girkin-Strelkov's group into Donbass in the spring of 2014.
"Why don't we use the nuclear weapons that our ancestors developed and stockpiled with the full might of the nation for this very purpose?" he asked rhetorically.
Reuters also cites statements from less influential Russian nationalists, particularly the so-called Z-bloggers, who call on the Kremlin to destroy major Ukrainian cities, making them uninhabitable. Others declare that the time has come to abandon US-brokered peace talks once and for all and seek the complete destruction of the Ukrainian state.
Sources close to the Kremlin say Putin tolerates this rhetoric, but for now he tends to stick to his habit of ignoring ultranationalists. Such radical positions could complicate decision-making, while Moscow still wants to keep the door open to a possible diplomatic settlement.
According to Reuters, Putin currently appears confident in his current strategy of slow but steady advancement in Ukraine. For example, this week he boasted that Russia is close to capturing Kostyantynivka, a town that has been under fire for nearly a year and is the next stage in a broader plan to occupy the entire Donbas. Trecall, the war in Ukraine entered another intense week marked by some of the largest aerial attacks of the conflict, continued fighting along key eastern frontlines, and growing international concern over both the humanitarian toll of the war and the fate of thousands of Ukrainian children transferred to Russia. While ground operations remained largely characterized by attritional warfare and limited territorial changes, both sides significantly expanded long-range strikes against military, energy and industrial targets far behind the front line. In an effort to turn the tables on Russia's grinding war of attrition, Ukrainian long-range drones have been battering oil production and energy facilities behind the front line and deep inside Russia.
The campaign has choked Russian fuel supplies and military deliveries, stalling Moscow's efforts on the battlefield, Western officials and analysts say, and has heaped pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
