Video: Joe Biden Again Claims He Lost His Son in Iraq While Addressing Gold Star Families

In conversation with Gold Star families, President Joe Biden mistakenly claimed he lost his son in Iraq, a statement he has repeated despite his son’s death being due to cancer.

In a recent video clip shared by ABC’s Good Morning America on Twitter, President Joe Biden once again mentioned that he lost his son in Iraq while expressing condolences to Gold Star families who lost their loved ones in a drone attack in Jordan near the Syrian border, as reported by the military on January 28. The attack resulted in the death of three U.S. troops, including Spc. Kennedy Sanders, whom Biden honored in his call to the parents, indicating Sanders would be posthumously promoted to Sergeant. This conversation was captured in a video clip posted by Curtis Houck, Managing Editor of NewsBusters.

Of course Biden called one of the three families who lost their child in the Iran-backed drone attack annnnd he made it all about Beau, claiming he's been in their exact same position.

“My son spent a year in Iraq, that’s how I lost him,” Biden remarked during the call, highlighting the sacrifices made by military personnel. This statement, however, is not accurate regarding the cause of his son Beau Biden’s death. Beau Biden passed away in May 2015 from glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, following his service in Iraq that ended in 2009, as noted by the New York Post. President Biden has suggested that Beau’s illness was linked to toxic burn pits he encountered while serving in Iraq.

Despite the circumstances of Beau’s death, President Biden has, on several occasions throughout 2023, including during interactions with troops at Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan, repeated the claim that his son died while serving in Iraq, as reported by Fox News.

The repetition of this narrative has drawn attention, especially following Biden’s comparison of his loss to that of a Gold Star mother, Cheryl Rex, whose son was one of the 13 U.S. Servicemen killed during the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Rex recounted Biden’s attempt to empathize with her loss by referring to his own, despite the differing circumstances of Beau’s death.

As President Biden continues to share personal stories and anecdotes, some of which have been questioned for accuracy, concerns about his age and the implications for his capacity to serve have become more pronounced. A December story he repeated about a near-tragic incident involving his wife, alongside polling data from The Wall Street Journal indicating that a significant majority of Americans question his fitness for re-election due to age, underscore the growing scrutiny of Biden’s public statements as he navigates his presidency and potential candidacy for 2024.
