Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) voiced her support on Monday for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), amidst ongoing internal conflicts within the House of Representatives. Pelosi’s endorsement aligns with efforts by House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries to maintain Johnson’s position as Speaker, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity of the House amidst political turmoil.

Pelosi’s backing comes in response to a motion by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) aiming to remove Johnson from his leadership role. Greene, supported by Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ), has criticized Johnson for what they describe as betrayals of conservative principles. These include halting efforts to pass individual appropriations bills, pushing through legislation on warrantless surveillance, and approving significant foreign aid without addressing border security—despite previous commitments to the contrary.

Amid these controversies, Johnson reportedly informed donors of his readiness to exclude House members who obstruct his bipartisan legislative agenda from committee assignments. He also indicated a willingness to amend House rules, such as the motion to vacate the chair, by the end of the current congressional term.

Jeffries has asserted that, despite Republicans officially controlling the House, it is the Democrats who are effectively directing its legislative agenda. “Even though we’re in the minority, we’ve effectively been governing as if we were in the majority because we continue to provide a majority of the votes necessary to get things done,” Jeffries told CBS.

Greene expressed skepticism and concern over the Democratic support for Johnson, questioning the nature of the agreements that might be underpinning this cross-party backing. “The entire Democrat Party is lining up behind Mike Johnson. First, it was the entire leadership team for the Democrats. Now, Nancy Pelosi, who impeached President Trump TWICE, has given Johnson her seal of approval. What deal has been made??” Greene wrote.
