4.7-magnitude Earthquake Hits East Coast

4.7-magnitude Earthquake Hits East Coast

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit New Jersey Friday and was felt in New York City and other Northeast areas.

"New York City just felt the impacts of a 4.8 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter of Lebanon, New Jersey," The New York City Mayor's Office said in a social media post. "[The mayor] is being briefed. While we do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, we’re still assessing the impact."

The mayor's office urged people to take protective measures if an aftershock happens.

"In case of an aftershock, drop to the floor, cover your head and neck, and take additional cover under a solid piece of furniture, next to an interior wall, or in a doorway." read the advisory.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented ground stops for the Newark Liberty International Airport and the John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport until 11:30 a.m. EDT.

The ground stop was lifted for JFK airport afterward.

The federal agency extended the ground stops for the Newark airport.

New Jersey Transit ordered systemwide bridge inspections which caused a 20-minute delay.

"Rail service system-wide is subject to up to 20-minute delays in both directions due to bridge inspections following an earlier earthquake," the main public transportation service said in a statement.
