What Should You Think About When You Meditate ?

In an article on Transcendental Meditation, filmmaker David Lynch says, "I heard a phrase, 'True happiness is not out there. True happiness lies within.' And this phrase had a ring of truth to me, but the phrase doesn't tell you where the within is, nor how to get there. One day it hit me that meditation would be the way to go within."

The idea that meditation involves "turning off" your mind is false. Even though this isn't true, attempting to relax might be discouraging. However, the goal of meditation is to increase your awareness of your thoughts so that you can better manage and concentrate on them.

Intention

Caesar F. Barajas, an Aaptiv trainer and certified meditation and breathing techniques teacher, shares insights on what meditation truly entails and how to approach it effectively. “The idea behind meditation is to slow down the thought process, all while you’re focusing on deep and controlled patterns of breathing and physical awareness,” Barajas explains. Meditation helps you reach a state of consciousness where you’re focused on your inner state. This is why “meditation can happen anywhere, at any time,” Barajas says. “As long as you’re aware of your breathing cycles, it can be done sitting, commuting, traveling, walking exercise, etc.”

What should I think during meditation?

People struggle with meditation because they feel that they shouldn't be thinking at all. If you've tried it yourself, you've probably understood that it's difficult to be fully free of any thoughts. Our thoughts frequently go to various things we have to get done, general concerns, or just random places, depending on how we are feeling.

Instead of trying to shut your mind off, think about what inspires you when you meditate. This could include things you've read, people you admire, or something completely unrelated. Whatever it is, consider why it inspires you, and see if that prompts any original thought.

Tips to Start Meditation

1. Start with your breath

Begin your meditation by inhaling deeply multiple times. Try to concentrate on your breathing and notice how your body is affected by each breath. Your breath will guide your meditation.

2. Scan your body

Spend a moment concentrating on each area of your body. Feel your feet on the ground, your arms by your sides, and the chair's seat. Evaluate your feelings in each area.

3. Evaluate your energy

Consider your current feelings at this time. Do you feel drained or energized? What can be zapping your vitality if you feel run down? Think of anything that might be keeping you up at night or occupying too much of your mind. Then, consider what you can do to lessen the issue either or eliminate it entirely.

4. Practice gratitude

Consider three things for which you are grateful as you begin your meditation. You'll realize why your life is so beautiful and become happier by concentrating on the aspects of it that you love.

5. Reflect on the day

Think about the day that just passed if you meditate in the morning, and if you meditate at night, consider everything that took place up to that point in the day. What happened? What did you discover?

Try to identify at least one reflection-worthy lesson or takeaway. Then consider how you may use that learning the next day.
