Beautiful tall hedgerows are a distinctive traditional feature in many parts of South West England and other parts of Britain.

Hedgerows were planted to keep livestock in and unwanted guests out. Different regions have different ways of planting. Some lay them, some leave them upright. Some are so dense that you can't see through them.

This lane ran through hedgerows that had once been laid but left to grow.

Typical trees in hedges are hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel and beech, depending on where you are.

I love these old lanes, so does the wildlife. Birds nest in these hedges and they are a vital part of the country.
