Perryville - The Fight For The Heartland - In the autumn of 1862, following significant victories in the Seven Days and Second Manassas battles, the Confederates initiated their only coordinated campaign in both the East and West. This campaign set the stage for subsequent events like Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Appomattox. The Confederate government aimed to end the war swiftly by launching a two-pronged offensive into Maryland and Kentucky, hoping to gain new recruits, supplies, European recognition, and potential military support from Britain and France. The Eastern campaign led to the war's bloodiest single day, while the Western campaign saw an equally devastating confrontation. The Battle of Perryville dashed the South's best hopes of victory. A Southern win would have led to the fall of the Union capital, control over the Ohio River and Chesapeake Bay, and possession of crucial rail lines and manufacturing facilities. Filmed with the help of Civil War experts and eight thousand re-enactors on the actual battlefield, Perryville explores the pre-war situation in the Border States and early battles along the Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers.
