The Keys islands begin in south Florida, about 15 miles from Miami, and extend in a gentle arc to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands. There are 1,700 islands, largely connected to the mainland by a long viaduct that crosses almost all of them. Key West is an island and a city at the same time. Since the 1940s, the island has more than doubled its surface area by filling in the salt pans that were located on its eastern side, and today it is about 4 miles long and just under 2 miles wide.†
Perhaps the most famous resident of Key West was Ernest Hemingway. His home on Whitehead Street is open to visitors.†He bought this home in 1931 and lived there for 10 years writing many of his most famous masterpieces! Every corner of this house speaks of Hemingway and his life, and although he moved out following the separation with his wife, he remained the owner until his death in 1961.
