How I Simplified My Life

Fifteen years ago, I felt trapped in a demanding 9-to-5 job. Beyond the standard 8 hours, there was the morning preparation, commuting, and extra work that made my days much longer. I came home exhausted and struggled to find energy for my young son. 
I was so caught up in the daily grind that I didn’t have the time or energy to question or reflect on my path. Eventually, I reached a breaking point when my mental health and personal life suffered, and I knew I had to make a change. 
Social conditioning often drives us to seek more and bigger things, and higher earnings can easily lead to increased spending. I found myself trying to live an upper-class lifestyle on a middle-class income, which kept me stuck in the rat race. To change my situation, I knew I needed to make lifestyle adjustments. 
I began exploring another career that would allow me to work from home and spend more quality time with my son. I started with some freelancing projects aligned with my interests and skills and I did this while still employed, focusing on building long-term client relationships. 
Yet freelancing does not always have the steady income from a 9-5 job. So a career shift alone wasn’t enough; I needed to start adopting a frugal and simple lifestyle if I wanted to make this transition work. It was challenging to let go of familiar comforts, but it was a now-or-never situation for me. I was in my 30s then with no savings and raising a son. I realized that if I didn’t make a change, I’d continue spinning my wheels longer than I would want to. 
It wasn’t easy, but I was more motivated than ever to get out of this rut. I gave myself 2 years to prepare for my career shift, which included learning how to budget, cutting out non-essential and impulse spending, focusing on saving, and moving to a more affordable apartment that helped reduce our costs. 
With a gradual, yet steady approach of simple and frugal living, I was able to slowly pay down debt and save enough to leave a job I wasn’t happy in. 

Rejecting Societal Norms

Ironically, simple living is not that simple. In fact, it is counter-culture. It often challenges the prevailing norms of consumerism, status symbols, and constant busyness that define modern life. 
When I quit my job, made a career shift and simplified my lifestyle, my life had a different kind of busyness. Working online, teaching my son, doing chores, and managing family responsibilities kept me busy. 
However, this felt more satisfying to me than my previous preoccupation with climbing the corporate ladder, seeking validation through status symbols, keeping up with the Joneses, and constantly chasing material success. This new busyness is rooted in meaningful activities and personal fulfillment, rather than the exhausting pursuit of external validation and material wealth. 
The media and society often shape our ideas about wealth and happiness in ways that can make us feel trapped in the hamster wheel. 
We might think that having a lot of material possessions will automatically bring us joy, but that’s not always the case. True happiness isn’t just about accumulating more; if we don’t manage our desires, we might find ourselves endlessly chasing the next thing and losing sight of what truly brings us contentment. 
As Jean-Jacques Rousseau wisely noted, “Money can buy material things, but real happiness must be truly earned.” 

Genuine Fulfillment 

Choosing to live simply isn’t just a lifestyle choice for me —it’s a way to challenge the busy, consumption-driven culture around us. 
It’s about finding a path that brings genuine fulfillment and aligns with our own values, rather than the endless pursuit of validation from others.
