In order to do truly effective lateral raises that target the lateral deltoid, you have to understand the anatomy behind the lateral raise motion, as well as the 90 Degree Rule. In this video, I go over how the supraspinatus is the muscle that's responsible for the first 15 degrees of abduction - NOT the lateral deltoid, so if want to hit and grow the lateral deltoid as much as possible, you need to start and stop your lateral raise motions with your arm already 15 degrees abducted - that way you're maintaining constant tension on the lateral deltoid.
