A 7.4-magnitude earthquake rocked Taipei on Wednesday and triggered a tsunami warning for Taiwan and the islands of southern Japan and the Philippines.

The quake hit at 7:58 a.m. local time at a depth of 9.6 miles just off the eastern coast of Taiwan, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said.

It was the strongest quake to hit the island in 25 years.

Footage from local television shows some buildings collapsed in the eastern county of Hualien, a city near the epicenter.

Some people reportedly were trapped.
